IKEA, the retail chain, has reached an agreement with the union to do away with youth wages. Soon all their staff will be paid at adult wages - that's good news for the nearly 200 staff who are under 21.Junior wages - is when young people get paid different rates according to their age until 21. This is a hot topic with much debate.
On one side, some say junior wages are unfair and discriminate against people because of their age. They say people should be paid according to their skills and the job they can do. Others are concerned that young people are dismissed from jobs as they get older, rather than because of their performance.
On the other side, employers says youth wages help create jobs for inexperienced young people. They say without lower wages they might not employ as many young people. Read our story about IKEA and youth wages.
What do you think? Are youth wages good for young people because they make them cheaper to hire? Or are youth wages a rip-off and age discrimination? Have your say, click on comment below ..

Youth wages are highly discriminatory and out dated. In a modern world young people have to support themselves just as much as any other adult. Well done to the SDA and IKEA for getting this out of the agreement.
Young people will not leave education for a few more dollars/hour. In fact it will keep them their longer because they won't have to leave education to support themselves on such a low rate of pay.
NZ has ended youth rates of pay and has not seen any decline in the rate of youth employment.
It's time all employers came into the real world and paid all employees a fair days pay for a fair days work.
10A Sose at Indooroopilly High agrees with William and congratulates William on his comments.
Whilst some difference could be expected during a training period, youth rates of pay are far too low at the moment.
Thanks 10A Sose
